Family ski holiday packing list: what to pack for skiing with kids

Skiing with children is mostly about layers, spares and the things that go missing on the lift. Hire what you can and pack what you can’t.

Tips

  • Salopettes keep snow out better than ski trousers when children fall over.
  • Pack a spare pair of gloves per child in their jacket pocket.
  • Check what the resort hires: helmets, skis and boots are easy to hire and save space.
  • Pack ski kit in a bag you can carry onto the bus or train on your own.

Common questions

What should kids wear skiing?

Thin layers that can be added or removed: a base layer, a fleece, then a waterproof jacket and salopettes. Wool or synthetic layers keep them warm when damp, while cotton does not.

How many pairs of ski socks do I need?

One pair per day of skiing, or two if your child’s feet get wet or sweaty.

Should I buy or hire ski equipment?

For a first trip, hiring skis, boots and helmets is common. Buy the things that fit personally and are worn all day, like goggles, gloves and base layers.
